The total length allowed in an Ethernet layout must be less than 1200 feet;
past this you need a repeater to boost signal, else none of the network will
function. The only variable is whether your partner/wife will permit a
cable to be visible, I suppose!

if u don't wanna router (dont blame you, really), you can get an 'ethernet
hub' aka an 'ethernet switch'. They'll want to sell you a router. Don't
let 'em!

Basically, the switch works to 'split' your ethernet connex so it can go to
xbox live plus a computer w/o needing a router. A switch will be around
$25 CDN, whereas a router will be $50 and up....and up.

A SWITCH will NOT allow your PC and Xbox 360 to connect to the Internet at
the same time. You would need 2 assigned IP address from your ISP to do
such a thing, which is why a router is Required. Using just the normal 1 IP
address from your ISP, you can have as many of your own Private IP address
as you want. I in fact have BOTH myself. I have a DLINK wireless router,.
DGL-4300, that my PC is plugged into, and I have a long Ethernet Cable going
to my Entertainment Center where I have a DLINK 5 port SWITCH. ZERO setup
required for the switch, it's just plug-in and go.

Anyway I have my Xbox 360, Toshiba HD DVD Player, Panasonic Blu-Ray Player,
and HD Homerun, plugged into the Switch at my Entertainment Center. All get
there own Private IP address on my network assigned by the ROUTER, and all
can connect to the Internet from my single IP address COMCAST gave me.

A switch doesn't do most people any good, you HAVE to get a router,
otherwise your going to have connection problem issues. A switch is just
fine if all your doing is connecting your Xbox 360 and PC together with NO
Internet service. Or your going to connect 2, 3,or 4 360's together to game
together. Once you throw the Internet into the mix, a ROUTER is required.
You can also find wired Routers for pretty CHEAP, but you do get what you
pay for. I've had a few cheapies, and now I have a really good and Reliable
but costly Router.

You should have no problem running a 75 foot long Ethernet Cable. For sure
it'll be a much faster and better reliable connection then wireless which I
would only use for say a Laptop PC you move from place to place. Not a
gaming system. Wired is also far cheaper. It's also not that hard to make
your own Cables, fit to size also. The Hard part is making sure the wires
are put into the plug in the correct order which can be somewhat of a
hassle, but worth it. It's also sometimes hard to Route the cable so it's
hidden. Using Fishing Tape, you can run inside walls, Under the Carpet,
sometimes behind Baseboard, etc.. Basically the same type of tricks you
would do for a surround sound setup when needing to hide speaker wires.
Once it's done though it's so worth it and you may never have to screw with
it again, or at least a very, very long time.
